AN EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK
On arriving in Rarotonga for the first time...

Deep emotions were mixed with an overwhelming desire to see something of this island of my dreams as soon as possible. OK, I admit it; I cried tears of joy and darkness wasn't going to get in the way of discovery. In fact, it made for a memory to last a lifetime.

Strolling along a beach which was deserted and silent apart from the pounding of the Pacific Ocean, the best free show in town was underway. With no light pollution, looking up into the night sky was like seeing the view inside a planetarium. Billions of stars sparkled down as they must have done since the first Polynesians crossed uncharted seas in their canoes to reach these islands more than a thousand years ago

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Roberts (also author of this website) spent much of his working life as a journalist, first on newspapers and then in radio and television. A lot of that time was at the BBC in the UK, where he reported and presented for local, national and World Service radio, and regional and national TV news. His love of the written word continues to this day and is on a par with his passion for the Cook Islands. Down the years he’s made multiple trips, and written and broadcast in New Zealand, Australia and the UK about the Islands. More about the author

WHY PROFITS ARE GOING TO CHARITY
My mum died from Alzheimer's in 2022 and, in her memory, I wanted to help charities that are doing so much to help others who are touched by this cruel illness. Although they're UK based, their research work is benefiting people worlwide
